A Midsummer Night's Dream

by William Shakespeare
24th - 27th April 2001
Directed by Mike Kelly

The Story :

Shakespeare's classic comedy sees a wild series of mishaps leading to eventual true love in an enchanted forest full of fairies.

The Facts :

The look for this version was a mish mash of punk and glittery fairies, regal upper classes of Athens, modern teenagers along with a diverse troupe of actors with scumbags, jockeys, farmers and football fans within the mix.

The look for David Thompson's Puck was based on Brandon Lee's character in the movie The Crow.

We featured Kenneth Branagh as a cast member in the program pen pics. He was playing the flower. We thought it was funny. You know, Shakespeare and Kenneth Branagh, that whole connection. Also, Mike Kelly's face was superimposed onto Shakespeare's in the same program.

The diverse array of music used in this production included 'Love Train' by the O-Jays, 'Brainstew' by Green Day, 'What a Wonderful World / Somewhere over the Rainbow' by Israel Kamakwai'ole and 'It's a Kind of Magic' by Queen.

Mike Kelly originally envisioned the fairies scooting around on roller blades

Memorable Scene :

Pyramus and Thisbe , the play within the play

Choice Line :

Puck: 'If we shadows have offended, think but this and all is mended.
